GAME REPORT
Spain Overpower Belgium
Belgium stuck with Spain as long as they could before eventually falling to a 67-46 U20 European Championship Women Group F defeat in Teguise, Lanzarote on Monday.
Turning Point: Judith Sole's three-point play midway through the third quarter marked the start of a swift 7-0 run which included a clumsy Belgian turnover on an inbounds play and began to sap Belgium's spirited defiance and ensure the hosts would carry a double-digit lead into the final 10 minutes.
Stats Don't Lie: Although never comfortable, Spain led the contest from start to finish and always appeared ready to step up a gear if required. A big factor in Belgium's inability to force the issue was that they allowed Spain to convert 28 points from turnovers.
Game Hero: Leticia Romero demonstrated the maturity and productivity that has seen her involved with the senior squad during recent competitions. The point guard coordinated the Spanish offence, not always with the ball in her hands, and could be counted on to produce big plays too, going for 13 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists.
The Bottom Line: Belgium can be positive about the way they pushed Spain, but small mistakes had big consequences, which may not be so harshly punished against Hungary in their next game. Spain continue their drive towards the quarter-finals, their vocal home support loving every second.
