Leticia Romero: Donde va, triunfa

Leticia Romero (28/05/1995, Agüimes, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) es una jugadora que a sus 19 años ha demostrado que no hay competición que se le resista. Una de las perlas del club que más jóvenes promesas y futuras estrellas es capaz de formar, el Gran Canaria 2014. Como jugadora es la mezcla perfecta de talento, trabajo e inteligencia. A finales de agosto del año pasado Leticia Romero dejó su isla Gran Canaria y al equipo con el que debutó en Liga Femenina con 15 años, el Gran Canaria 2014, para irse a otro país para disputar la NCAA, la liga universitaria de los Estados Unidos de América.

Llegó a la Universidad de Kansas State donde destacó desde el primer partido de pretemporada el 28 de octubre de 2013 con 25 puntos, 14 rebotes, 4 asistencias y 4 robos en los 26 minutos que estuvo en la pista. En ese partido contra Washburn y delante de su público en el estadio Bramlage Coliseum, fue la máxima anotadora y reboteadora de su equipo y del partido. Han pasado cuatro meses desde la primera vez que Leticia se puso el uniforme de las Wildcats de K-State y durante este tiempo, partido tras partido, ha ido batiendo récords impensables para una jugadora española en su año como Freshman (novata) en la NCAA. Y aún le queda por jugar el Campeonato de la Conferencia Big 12.

En la primera semana de la temporada regular en su Conferencia, fue nombrada “Phillips 66 Big 12 Freshman of the week” (mejor novata de la semana) galardón que repetiría 4 veces más para convertirse en la única jugadora en la historia de K-State en conseguirlo. Una jugadora normal se conformaría con eso, pero hablando de Leticia Romero sabíamos que ahí no se quedaría todo, y así fue. Ha sido nominada a “Big 12 Freshman of the year” galardón que lamentablemente no ha conseguido llevarse, pero ha conseguido formar parte del “Second Team All-Big 12” y formar parte por unanimidad del “Big 12 All-Freshman”.

Tirando de estadística sabemos que en este apartado también ha hecho historia en su universidad, ya que ha sido una de las mejores temporadas de una novata. Ha liderado a su equipo con 14.2 puntos, 5.8 rebotes, 4.8 asistencias y 1.9 robos. Sus 412 puntos en la temporada la convierten en la novata que más puntos ha metido en su universidad desde la temporada 2001/02 y sus 140 asistencias la dejan en la tercera posición en K-State.

Si a todo esto le sumamos los títulos conseguidos con la selección española en las diferentes categorías de base, Cuarta en el Campeonato del Mundo U19, Campeona de Europa U18, siendo MVP del torneo y formando parte del Mejor Equipo del torneo, Subcampeona Mundial U17, formando parte del Mejor Equipo del torneo junto a Diamond DeShields y Linnae Harper (ambas en la NCAA) y Campeona de Europa U16, lo único que podemos hacer es sentarnos, disfrutar viendo sus partidos y esperar a que siga haciendo historia y batiendo récords, que lo hará.

La grancanaria Leticia Romero, jugadora de la Universidad de Kansas State, agregó otro par de piezas de oro a su colección de galardones individuales y colectivos, ya que en su primera temporada con las ‘Wildcats’ fue nombrada en el segundo mejor quinteto de la NCAA, el “All-Big 12 Second Team”, siendo también seleccionada, de manera unánime, para el “Big 12 All-Freshman Team” (lo que viene a ser estar en el mejor quinteto de jugadoras de primer año), en un anuncio oficial realizado por la liga de baloncesto durante el jueves 6 de marzo.

Romero se convierte, de esta manera, en la primera representante del equipo de K-State en estar en el ”Big 12 All-Freshman Team” desde Ashley Sweat, quien lo lograra en la temporada 2006-07, siendo la primera estudiante “rookie” en ser nombrada en un “All-Big” desde el año 2002.

Durante su temporada de debut, Romero ha anotado 412 puntos (104/231 en tiros de 2, 37/94 en triples y 93/122 en tiros libres), con 167 rebotes (127 defensivos y 40 ofensivos), 140 asistencias, 55 robos, 125 pérdidas, 6 tapones y 91 faltas personales, siendo la primera novata de la Universidad de Kansas State y la primera base “rookie” de la Primera División de la NCAA en acabar la temporada con la combinación de 400 o más puntos, 100 o más rebotes, 100 o más asistencias y 50 o más robos.

La base de Agüimes, que fue la primera jugadora en la historia de la escuela en ser seleccionada cuatro veces como “Phillips 66 Big 12 Freshman de la semana” ha reconstruido una de las mejores temporadas de primer año en la universidad estadounidense, promediando 14,2 puntos (10ª en ránking total), 5,8 rebotes (15ª), 4,8 asistencias (6ª) y 1,9 robos (7ª).

Romero, además, también se encuentra entre las 15 primeras jugadoras de la liga en porcentaje de triples (39,36%, 6ª), tiros libres (76,23 %, 12ª), rebotes defensivos por partido (4,4, 12ª) y minutos por partido (32,3, 9ª).

Sus 412 puntos esta temporada son la cuarta anotación más alta cosechada por un estudiante de primer año en la historia de la Universidad de Kansas State, siendo la mayor desde la temporada 2001-02. Las 140 asistencias que Romero repartió son la tercera mejor marca para la escuela para una “rookie” y la 11ª más alta en la historia de las ‘Wildcats’ en una sola temporada.

Kansas State terminó la temporada regular con un balance de 11-18 en la general y una marca de 5-13 en la Big 12, quedando en novena posición. El equipo de Leticia Romero se enfrentará al octavo clasificado, la Universidad de Kansas (12-18, 5-13), en un ‘derbi’ estatal, correspondiente a la “2014 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championships” en el Chesapeake Energy Arena de Oklahoma City (Oklahoma), partido que se disputará el viernes 8 de marzo a las 18:00 horas (hora local) y que se emitirá a través de la FOX College Sports Central.

Ahora que la crisis afecta al basket y hay jugadoras que están saliendo de España, es un gran momento para conocer a las futuras cracks de nuestro baloncesto. Más allá de las Marta Xargay, Cristina Ouviña, Anna Cruz o Alba Torrens, que ya son una realidad, miro un poco más abajo y os dejo algunos nombres de las más jóvenes, para que las vayáis conociendo!!!!!

Belén Arrojo (1,88 m., 1995, Beroil Ciudad de Burgos)
Una jugadora polivalente, que ha dado un salto del Siglo XXI a la Liga Femenina, a un equipo que apuesta por ella y que está logrando objetivos clasificatorios impensables a principio de temporada. Está disfrutando de muchos minutos y quiero destacar también a su entrenador, Pepe Vázquez. Es muy buena al poste bajo y saca ventaja de su físico. Instinto para el rebote ofensivo y buena en el juego sin balón.

Carolina Esparcia (1.79 m., 1995, Zaragoza)
Se mueve muy bien en las posiciones de 2 y de 3. Pese a su juventud no comete errores. Buena en el uno contra uno, busca muy bien los espacios. Muy buen tiro corto y capacidad de mejora en el lanzamiento de larga distancia.

Iho López (1.90 m., 1997, Uni Girona)
A pesar de su juventud disfruta de minutos en el equipo de Anna Caula. Físico prodigioso y buena mano en tiros cortos. Capacidad para rebotear. Una auténtica perla del Uni Girona en LF1.

Iris Junio (1.80 m. 1999, Gran Canaria 2014)
Ya hablé de ella aquí, en KIA en Zona. Un diamante en bruto. Tiene una capacidad física extraordinaria. Su desparpajo con 14 años sorprende cuando está en la pista. Buena en el uno contra uno, no elude el contacto. Buen manejo de balón y capaz de finalizar con dos manos. Jugadora de carácter ‘made in Begoña Santana-Domingo Díaz’.

Laura Quevedo (1.85 m., 1996, Rivas Ecópolis)
El trabajo con el primer equipo de Rivas le ha hecho mejorar su físico, uno de los hándicaps que lastraba su juego. Pasaba desapercibida, pero siempre suma. Echa bien el balón al suelo. Buena reboteadora, excelente tiradora, tanto de corta como de larga distancia.

Ángela Salvadores (1.85 m., 1997 Siglo XXI)
Carácter y ambición sin límites. “Jugona”. No se esconde, es valiente. Excelente driblando. ¿Su mayor virtud? El uno contra uno en velocidad. Pese a su estatura, saca petróleo en sus entradas a canasta. Finaliza bien en velocidad, incluyendo triples en carrera.


Leticia Romero (1.78m., 1995, Kansas)
Talento puro, cabeza, constancia… Una líder. Virtuosa del deporte de la canasta. Tiene todo lo que debe tener una buena base. Capacidad de control del juego (timing), liderazgo… Hace mejores a sus compañeras. Buena en el rebote y excelente pasadora. Lo tiene todo y en NCAA está deslumbrando

Ari Pujol (1.84m. 1995, University of South Florida y GEM)
Jugadora zurda, aparentemente no tiene una gran fortaleza física visible o apreciable pero tiene una velocidad endiablada. Capaz de sacar ventaja en cada acción a campo abierto y en estático. Capaz de cualquier tiro desde cualquier posición de la forma más inverosimil. Buena tiradora.

Marina Lizarazu (1.75m. 1995, Texas Tech)
Muy habilidosa en sus penetraciones. Buen control del balón. Muy valiente. Utiliza bien el cuerpo para sacar ventajas y crear espacios. Buena tiradora. Comete pocos errores y tiene mucha fuerza menta.

Sims and Romero Named Big 12 Women’s Basketball Players of the Week

Odyssey Sims (Baylor) and Leticia Romero (K-State) were selected for Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball weekly awards, as chosen by a media panel. Sims earned her 14th career award and ninth player of the week recognition, including the seventh this season. Romero picked up her fourth freshman accolade.

The senior guard tallied 38 points, which included four treys and 10 free throws, nine assists and four steals in a win over Oklahoma. She followed that performance with 39 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals in a two-point loss to West Virginia. With 2,355 points, Sims moved up to No. 5 on the Big 12’s career scoring chart, passing Kansas State’s Kendra Wecker. She is averaging a nation’s-best 30.2 points per game.

Romero Earns Big 12 Freshman of the Week Honor

First Wildcat in school history to earn four Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State’s Leticia Romero strung together one of her strongest weeks of the season for K-State, helping the Wildcats to a road win at its rival Kansas. For her efforts, she was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season. She is the first Wildcat in school history to be named Big 12 Freshman of the Week four times.

Romero, the league’s top freshman scorer and passer, approached a triple-double with 26 points on a career-best 10-of-16 shooting and a 4-of-6 effort from the foul line, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals. This was the 13th game this season that Romero was responsible for 50 percent or more of K-State’s made field goals.

At Oklahoma State, Romero registered 19 points, four rebounds, four assists, four steals and a block. With her 19 points, she became the fourth freshman in school history and the first since the 2001-02 season to reach the 400-point mark. She is the only freshman in the Big 12, the first freshman in school history and one the only freshman guard in NCAA Division I with 400 or more points, 100 or more rebounds, 100 or more assists and 50 or more steals.

For the season, Romero leads K-State in scoring (14.5 ppg), rebounds (5.7 rpg), assists (4.7 apg) and steals (1.9 spg). Romero is the only freshman in the Big 12 to average 10 or more points, 5.5 or more rebounds, 4.5 or more assists and 1.5 or more steals. She has reached double figures in scoring 20 times this season, has pulled in five or more rebounds 17 times and has handed out five or more assists 14 times.

STILLWATER, Okla. – Trailing by 13 at the half, Kansas State recovered to capture a four-point lead late in the second half but a late 9-0 run by No. 15/14 Oklahoma State sent the Wildcats to a 67-62 loss at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Kansas State (11-17, 5-12 Big 12) was paced by Leticia Romero, Ashlynn Knoll and Kindred Wesemann. Romero reached double figures for the 20th time this season with 19 points. The Big 12 Freshman of the Year candidate also registered four rebounds, four assists and four steals. This was her 15th game this season with two or more steals.

Knoll came off the bench for the second straight game and provided the Wildcats with an offensive shot in the arm. The senior from Canyon, Texas carded career-highs of 19 points and eight rebounds. This was her third straight game in double digits.

Wesemann added 12 points which came on a 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. This was also third straight game in double figures for the freshman from Pleasant Hill, Mo.

The Wildcats suffered through a sluggish first half from the field, as K-State shot .321 from the floor (9-of-28), including .100 (1-of-10) from behind the 3-point line and trailed by 13 at the half, 36-23. Romero tallied eight points in the half.

Oklahoma State (22-6, 11-6) out-rebounded K-State, 22-9, in the opening stanza and shot .571 from the field (16-of-28). The Cowgirls were paced in the first half by Liz Donohoe and Tiffany Bias with nine points each.

K-State used a trio of 3-point field goals to cut into Oklahoma State’s halftime lead in the opening stages of the second half. Kindred Wesemann connected on her second 3-point field goal of the game right in from of K-State’s bench. Romero followed with three-point field goals on consecutive possessions to bring K-State to within seven, 39-32, with 15:13 to play.

Romero wasn’t finished as she connected on a runner in the lane to bring K-State to within six again, 41-35 with 13:09 to play. Oklahoma State then used a Bias layup and Donohoe three to build an 11-point lead, 46-35, with 11:22 remaining.

The Wildcats bounced back with a 9-2 run to narrow the game to 48-44 with 8:45 remaining. Ashia Woods and Romero each converted wide open layups, while Knoll registered a layup and a three on consecutive possessions.

A pair of free throws from Knoll gave K-State its first lead of the afternoon with 3:44 remaining in the game. After forcing a missed shot from the Cowgirls, Knoll answered with a fadeaway bank shot to give the Wildcats a 57-53 lead with 2:59 to play.

Oklahoma State used an 8-0 run to capture a 61-57 lead on the Wildcats with under a minute to play. Following a pair of Bias free throws, K-State turned the ball over to Oklahoma State during the Cowgirls full court press resulting in a quick layup. Another K-State turnover resulted in a two free throws for OSU, followed by a layup by Brittany Atkins. Free throws from Bias sealed the victory for the Cowgirls.

Oklahoma State saw four players reach double figures, led by Bias and Brittney Martin. Bias recorded 17 points, while Martin registered a double-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds, four steals and two assists.

For the game, K-State shot .390 from the field including .452 in the second half. Oklahoma State shot .480 from the floor which included a .364 effort in the second half.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas State built an early 21-0 lead on Wednesday night, and used a strong second half shooting performance to defeat Kansas, 76-68, at Allen Fieldhouse. The win ends a four-game road losing streak and halts a three-game skid to Kansas.

K-State (11-16, 5-11 Big 12) dashed out to a 13-0 start by going 6-of-6 from the field, forcing two early Kansas (12-16, 5-11) timeouts in the first half. Leticia Romero registered a trio of jump shots, while Kindred Wesemann added a long 3-point field goal.

The Wildcats would build its early lead to 21-0 at 13:58 of the first half following three-point field goals from Romero and Wesemann. The Jayhawks did not register their first field goal until 12:19 of the frame, but used a 14-5 run to narrow K-State’s lead to 26-14 with 7:43 to play.

Kansas State would rebuild its lead to 16, 35-19, as Ashia Woods converted on an acrobatic layup. Kansas would cut the K-State lead to 11, 35-24, but a heads up play by Romero on an inbounds play gave K-State a 37-24 lead at the half.

The 37 points marked the most first half points by K-State in a Big 12 game this season and the most since scoring 39 against UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 15, 2013. The Wildcats shot an even .500 from the floor (16-of-32) and turned the ball over just three times. Kansas shot a .320 field goal percentage and turned the ball over eight time resulting in seven points for K-State.

Both teams started the second half on a blistering pace from the field, as K-State was shooting .625 from the floor for 11 points, while Kansas was .714 for 15 points, as K-State held a 48-39 lead with 14:03 to play. Chantay Caron carded six of K-State’s first 11 points to begin the second half.

Kansas would cut the K-State lead to two twice, with the Wildcats holding a 53-51 edge with 8:22 remaining. A 7-0 run by the Wildcats over a two-minute stretch pushed K-State’s lead back to eight, 66-58, with 3:52 to play.

The Jayhawks cut K-State’s lead to five, 69-64, with 1:52 to play on a pair of free throws from Natalie Knight. The Wildcats responded as Romero found Wesemann open in the corner for a three with 1:31 remaining to give K-State a 72-64 advantage. Romero would connect on four free throws down the stretch to provide the final margin.

K-State saw three player reach double figures for the ninth time this season. Leading the way was Big 12 Freshman of the Year candidate Romero with 26 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals. This was her sixth game and her fifth in league action with 20 or more points.

Joining Romero in double figures were Wesemann, Ashlynn Knoll and Chantay Caron. Wesemann finished with a career-high 15 points, while Knoll added 12 off the bench. Caron, playing in her final game in her hometown, registered her first double figure effort of the season with 10 points.

For the night, K-State shot a season-high .574 from the field which included a season-best field goal percentage for a half at .682 in the second stanza.

Kansas State will conclude its final two-game road trip of the season on Saturday afternoon, as the Wildcats face No. 15/14 Oklahoma State in Stillwater at 1:30 p.m. The game will be available on the K-State Sports Network and for free at kstatesports.com/allaccess.
