As summer approaches so does one of the biggest opportunities in Leticia Romero’s career as a basketball player.
Romero, the starting point guard of the Florida State women’s basketball team, is vying for a spot on the 2016 Olympic Spanish National Team. For the Las Palmas, Spain native this would be a chance to be the very idol that she once looked up to many years ago.
“When I was a kid and use to watch the Olympics, I saw all those people as heroes,” Romero said. “Like, people that just have some kind of talent and they’re there just playing and it was so cool.”
Making the Olympic team would be a feat that no other Seminole has ever accomplished for Florida State women’s basketball. If Romero were to make the cut she would more than likely be the youngest player on the team as well. The junior will be 21 years old on May 28.
Having been on the Spanish National Team each of the last two summers, Romero is no stranger when it comes to playing with significantly older players than her.
“When you’re there practicing, I remember last summer my biggest worry or focus was not to make mistakes,” Romero said. “Not to have those silly mistakes like turning the ball over and doing stuff like that because they are very good at being sharp and locked in.”
The guard has shined brightest when playing against Top 25 competition. During her past two seasons at Florida State, Romero is averaging 11.9 points, four rebounds, and 4.6 assists while shooting 45.5 percent overall and 50 percent from downtown against ranked teams.
Romero should expect to see similar, if not better, talent in Olympic play.
Florida State women’s basketball head coach Sue Semrau has more than prepared Romero for the tall task that the junior is readying herself for. The guard spoke on some of the advice that her coach has given her.
“She has told me just to, you know, don’t be afraid of taking responsibility and making plays just because most of the people are older," Romero said of Semrau's advice. She just tries to encourage me and tell me that ‘You’re good. You’re going to make it’. And that’s great for me too. I appreciate that from her.”
The first phase of Romero’s journey will begin on May 10, the initial day of tryouts with the Spanish National Team. After that, the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament takes place in Nantes, France. Spain must qualify for the Olympics by finishing in the Top 5 among 12 teams. If qualified, the Spanish National Team will reconvene at the end of June.
At that time, Romero will have some idea as to if she has made the team or not. Olympic basketball competition will tip off on August 6.
“To have that opportunity to be there…It’s amazing.”
