Leticia Romero of Spain headed the All Tournament team, claiming MVP honours |
Having helped Spain deliver their first U18 European Championship Women title in four years, Leticia Romero was given further reason to celebrate after taking the Tournament MVP crown in Vukovar.
The MVP award iced the cake for Romero, who was outstanding in the Final itself against France and excelled throughout. She led the tournament in steals with 2.7 steals-per-game and also averaged 13.1 points and 3.6 assists and 5.1 rebounds-per-game.
Having been left absolutely shattered and virtually inconsolable by her teams' single point loss in the bronze medal game, there was consolation for Dutch playmaker Laura Cornelius, whose impressive progression booked her a spot on the All-Tournament Team. She averaged 12.1 points and 3.0 assists-per-game, but also showed great maturity and leadership.
For much of the competition, France lived off the ice-cold shooting prowess of Marine Johannes and she took her place in the line-up after shooting 38.1% from downtown en-route to 9.1 points-per-game.
As Serbia gained back-to-back bronze medals at the event, their frontcourt of Aleksandra Crvendakic and Dragana Stankovic were both recognised in the voting and took the last two spots on the team.
Dynamic forward Crvendakic, who is also eligible to still play in the same competition next summer, averaged a stunning tournament double-double of 16.1 points and 10.9 rebounds. She also showed she has excellent vision by dishing up a wonderful 4.5 assists-per-game.
Stankovic remember her decisive contribution in the bronze medal thriller with the Netherlands for a very long time. Her last second basket on the buzzer handed her team their place on the podium, but it was her outstanding defence which will also be remembered.
She led the tournament in blocked shots with a spectacular 3.8 per-game and averaged 15 points and 8.8 rebounds every time she stepped out.
The Turkish delegation were handed the Fair Play Award for the impressive sportsmanship they showed throughout the duration of the competition.
