Bulgak was selected as an All-ACC First Team member, joining nine other ACC student-athletes. Romero earned a spot on the five-player All-ACC Second Team, while Thomas was chosen on the five-member All-ACC Freshman Team.
“I’m very proud of all the work these three players have put in to help our team accomplish so much this season,” FSU head coach Sue Semrau said. “Everyone on our team has been vital to our 27 wins and 14 ACC wins. It’s fulfilling for me to have three players who are playing their first seasons in such a tough league like the ACC and watch them each come away with individual accolades. Adut, Leti and Shakayla deserve to be recognized for their outstanding work, but their selflessness has been a big reason why our team has had an enjoyable year so far.”
Bulgak becomes the ninth Seminole to be selected as an All-ACC First Team performer and the 10th Florida State first-team player (Natasha Howard was placed on the All-ACC First Team in 2013 and 2014). The resident of Edmonton, Canada, became one of the league’s top rebounders averaging 10.1 boards overall and 10.3 rebounds in conference play.
Bulgak finished the regular season leading Florida State in points per game (13), rebounds, blocked shots (50), free throw percentage (75.6 percent) and field goals made (139). The former JUCO National Player of the Year is tied for second in school history with 12 double-doubles and is attempting to become just the fifth Seminole ever to finish the season averaging a double-double.
Romero made her Seminole debut against Jacksonville on Dec. 29 and elevated FSU during conference play. The Las Palmas, Spain, native is averaging 10.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 5.5 assists and shooting 51.3 percent (57-of-112) from the floor. Romero joins Notre Dame’s Lindsay Allen as the only players in the ACC who rank in the Top 10 in field goal percentage and assists.
In her 17 games with the Seminoles, Romero has achieved several noteworthy feats. In conference play, Romero is the only guard in the ACC who has dished out nine assists or more in three games, highlighted by her career-best 11 assists against Boston College on Feb. 22. In that same game, Romero became the second Seminole ever to record a triple-double, finishing with 19 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists and no turnovers.
The additions of Bulgak and Romero to the All-Conference Teams give the Seminoles a total of 19 different players who have made either the first or second team. Altogether, FSU has garnered 29 All-ACC selections. In five of the last six seasons, the Seminoles have had at least one player earn first team honors.
Thomas has proven to be FSU’s most productive freshman since Seminole legend Natasha Howard’s first season in the 2010-11 year. The Sylacauga, Ala., native has started 27 of her 30 games off the bench and averaged 9.7 points in 19.1 minutes per game. Thomas is the 10th Seminole to earn a spot on the All-ACC Freshman Team and the first since Howard in 2011.
The athletic forward finished the regular season with 17 double-figure scoring games, which included a career-best 19 points against Savannah State and Virginia Tech. When Bulgak was forced to miss two ACC games against Pitt and Virginia Tech due to a concussion, Thomas stepped into the starting lineup and averaged 16 points, 8.5 rebounds and shot 66.7 percent (14-of-21). She also stepped up with two game winners at Purdue and at home versus Louisville.
