TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Two Florida State Women’s Basketball players in senior point guard Leticia Romero and junior forward Shakayla Thomas were selected to the Naismith Top 30 Women’s Player’s List, announced today by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Both players advanced to the next stage for the Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year after appearing on the Naismith Trophy Watch List. The 10 semifinalists will be announced March 2. The ACC leads with nine players.
Romero is producing another All-America worthy season, emerging as the only 50/50/90 player in the ACC. The Spanish Olympian is shooting 52.7 percent overall, 55.6 percent from beyond the arc and 92.9 percent from the free throw line. She is a watch list member for the Wooden Award and Wade Trophy and a Senior CLASS Award candidate.
The Las Palmas, Spain, native has six career 20-point games, with four of them coming this season. Romero leads the ACC in both 3-point field goal percentage and free throw percentage, and excels when it matters the most: In her seven games this season vs. AP Top 25 opponents, she is averaging 15.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 55.2 percent from the field, 56.5 percent from 3-point range and 95.8 percent (23-of-24) from the line.
Thomas is another watch list candidate for the Wooden Award as well as the Naismith and Wade Trophies. She leads the Seminoles averaging 14.5 points while averaging 5.4 rebounds and shooting 51.9 percent. In ACC play, she has elevated those numbers to 15.3 points per game and 52.1 percent from the floor.
The Sylacauga, Ala., native has hit her hottest stretch yet this season, averaging 18.0 points over her last five games and shooting 55.4 percent from the floor. In that same stretch, she has led FSU in second-half scoring with 11.2 points, and leads FSU averaging 8.0 points in the second half this year. She has led FSU in scoring in 11 games this season.
