No. 6/5 Noles Host No. 16 Miami on Monday

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – For the fifth consecutive meeting, No. 6/5 Florida State Women’s Basketball (21-2, 9-1) and No. 16/16 Miami (17-5, 6-4) square off as AP Top 25 opponents. It is the eighth time in series history both teams face each other as nationally-ranked foes, with FSU holding a 5-2 advantage in those meetings.
Fans can get in free to Monday’s game by showing their ticket to the previous men’s game against Clemson from Sunday.
The in-state rivals play at the Donald L. Tucker Center on Monday evening at 7 p.m. on the ACC’s Regional Sports Networks. For Floridians, the game will air on FOX Sports Florida, and will be distributed on several other regional networks throughout the country.
In the first meeting this season on Dec. 29, 2016, senior point guard Leticia Romero and redshirt junior guard Imani Wright each scored 19 points to lead the Seminoles to an 81-66 road win in Miami. The matchup was the highest AP Top 25 ranking by both teams when playing each other.
Florida State’s senior class of Brittany Brown, Ivey Slaughter, Kai James and Romero (transferred in 2014) go for their unprecedented 100th win as a class (currently 99-27). In FSU’s 85-53 win at Boston College on Thursday, they reached their 99th win to set the record for most wins by a senior class, eclipsing the 2010 and 2011 senior classes at FSU.
A win over Miami would give FSU a record-breaking seven AP Top 25 wins so far this season. The 2016-17 Seminoles are tied with the 2014-15 squad for most AP Top 25 wins in a season at six, showing an impressive 6-1 record this season. FSU has won six consecutive games vs. AP Top 25 opponents.
Prior to Monday’s matchup, Romero will be honored for helping the Spanish Olympic Team to a silver medal in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio. The Las Palmas, Spain, native averaged 5.8 points off the bench to help Spain win its first-ever Olympic medal. Romero is the first collegiate women’s basketball player to medal in the Olympics since both Vicky Bullett (Maryland) and Bridgette Gordon (Tennessee) did so in 1988.
Romero has put up tremendous numbers in her six-game career vs. Miami. She is averaging 16.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, shooting 61.4 percent (35-of-57) and 57.1 percent from downtown (8-of-14) against the Hurricanes.
Over her last four games, junior forward Shakayla Thomas has averaged 17.8 points per game and shot 57.9 percent (33-of-57) from the floor. Thomas’ 20 points last game at Boston College is her 12th career 20-point game. The rest of her teammates have combined for 14 in an FSU uniform.
Unofficially counting her total at Illinois, junior center Chatrice White’s 27 career double-doubles would lead the ACC. Her first double-double at FSU came at Miami, getting 13 and 10 off the bench on Dec. 29.
A win by FSU over Miami would give the Seminoles their 13th regular-season sweep over the Hurricanes in series history.
Following FSU’s game vs. Miami, the Seminoles return home for a Thursday matchup against Wake Forest at 7 p.m. That game will be live streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
