Marta Montoliu gave Spain the
ascendency required for victory on Friday night |
A scintillating 19-0 run saw
Spain assume control of what
had previously been a tight game and cruise past
Greece 55-38
to make it two wins from two at the
U20 European Championship
Women in Udine on Friday.
Turning Point: When Foteini Priona tied things up at 25 just
before half-time it gave Greece a real lift. But such optimism was short-lived
as Marta Montoliu responded with a triple of her own which sparked a 5-0
mini-run into the half. After the break that run graduated into a game-changing
19-0 sequence from which the Greeks could not recover.
Game Hero: With fellow leader Anna Stamolamprou struggling
from the floor, Vasiliki Tarla did what she could to drag her team into
contention with 11 points and 16 rebounds but it would never be enough against a
balanced Spanish attack led by Montoliu's 14 points.
Stats Don't Lie: Turnovers and the execution of punishing
those turnovers was a deciding factor here. Greece committed 22 turnovers to
Spain's 12 and the reigning champions proceeded to turn those Greek mistakes
into 12 points.
The Bottom Line: No matter the manner in which they have
done it, Spain remain unbeaten through their first two games and there is no
doubt more to come from this loaded roster, as they make a tilt at a fourth
straight title at this level. Greece have pushed both their opponents so far and
will be able to draw what they need from that, with their aim being to cement
their place in Division A for next
year.
