Olivia Epoupa is 2014 U20 European Championship Women MVP
France point guard Olivia Epoupa has been named MVP of the U20 European Championship Women after inspiring France to their first title at this level since 2009, in Udine on Sunday.
The 20-year-old skipped the competition last year in order to represent France at the U19 World Championship for Women and that experience benefitted her team this time around as she led from the first day to the last.
She had 12 points and seven rebounds in the final, including some clutch free throws as France showed nerves of steel to beat three-time reigning champions Spain in overtime.
Epoupa led the competition in steals with 35 and while she did not put up huge numbers in other categories she was undoubtedly the leader of the French team dictating the pace and setting the tone on both ends of the floor in every game.
Her experience at senior level in EuroCup with Basket Landes was a huge factor for the French as time and again she elevated her performance above others on the floor in the key moments.
Never was this more in evidence than when she pulled down 11 boards in the semi-final against Serbia, despite being the shortest player on the court, while also scoring 13 points.
She was selected as the competition's outstanding player by the panel of head coaches.
The panel also selected the four players to line-up alongside the MVP in the tournament's top five.
