MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State’s Leticia Romero
garnered the first Big 12 Freshman of the Week honor this season,
following her impressive debut in a Wildcat uniform over the weekend.
Romero is the first K-State recipient of this honor since the 2010
season and the 18th time a Wildcat has earned the distinction.
For the weekend, Romero averaged 20.5 points on a .765 field goal percentage (13-of-17), including a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and a .750 free throw percentage (12-of-16). Romero is the first K-State freshman to record 40 or more points in her first two careers games since Laurie Koehn tallied 43 points to open the 2001-02 season.
Romero a product of Las Palmas, Spain, helped K-State to a 2-0 start for the fourth straight season and the ninth time in the last 10 seasons. Romero nearly carded a triple-double in her first career game as she registered a team-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc, eight assists and seven rebounds in just 27 minutes of action during K-State’s season-opening 85-53 win over Tennessee State.
Against Charlotte, Romero was nearly perfect on the day as she recorded her first career 20-point game with 25 points on 7-of-7 shooting from the field and 10-of-14 from the foul line. She also hauled in a team-high eight rebounds and dished out a team-best three assists. She is the first Wildcat other than Brittany Chambers to score 20 points in a game since Feb. 9, 2013 when Mariah White tallied 25 at Iowa State. Romero was the first Wildcat to attempt and make at least 10 free throws in a game since Brittany Chambers registered a 13-of-17 effort at Iowa State on Feb. 9.
Kansas State will now take to the road for the first time this season, as the Wildcats travel to El Paso, Texas to face UTEP on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. (CT).
