MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State built a 24-point lead halfway through the first half, but Charlotte clawed back into the game in the late stages of the second before free throws sealed the Wildcats’ win
on Sunday, 73-65, at Bramlage Coliseum.
Kansas State (2-0) was led by freshman guard Leticia Romero. The product of Las Palmas, Spain, registered game-highs of 25 points and eight rebounds while also dishing out three assists.
Charlotte (1-1) saw four players reach double figures, led by Ayanna Holmes with 15 points. Also in doubles figures were Hillary Sigmon with 14 points, Kira Gordone with 11 and Lefty Webster with 10.
For the second straight game, K-State pieced together a strong start. The Wildcats held an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game, as Kindred Wesemann connected on a pair of three-point field goals to jump start the offense. Wesemann finished with nine points and four rebounds.
The Wildcats continued their hot start, building a 15-0 lead to force the 49ers into using a second timeout in the first six minutes. Following the timeout, Charlotte would get on the board with a three-pointer but K-State used a 7-0 run to hold a 22-3 lead with 12:39 remaining.
Katya Leick sparked the run with a three-point play followed by a layup for five straight points. This was Leick’s first action in a K-State uniform since transferring from Nebraska in the spring of 2011. She finished her first game as a Wildcat with nine points and seven rebounds.
K-State would build a 24-point lead with 8:08 remaining in the opening stanza, capped by a Haley Texada three-pointer to give K-State a 32-8 lead. Charlotte would use a 9-0 run over a two minute stretch and an 11-5 run to end the first half to narrow the game to 39-28 at the half.
Charlotte closed the game to eight, 45-37, early in the second half by using a 7-0 run. K-State responded with an 11-0 run, with five different players scoring during the stretch, to hold a 56-37 advantage with 10:21 remaining.
The 49ers would climb back into the game with a 10-2 run to bring the contest to 68-63 in favor of the Wildcats with under a minute to play. A free throw from Romero and four free throws by Texada sealed the win for the Wildcats.
K-State tallied a .377 field goal percentage for the afternoon, but were 27-of-36 (.750) from the foul line. K-State held Charlotte to a .364 field goal percentage and forced the 49ers into 17 turnovers.
Kansas State will now take to the road for the first time this season, as the Wildcats travel to El Paso, Texas to face UTEP on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. (CT).
