Spain moved a step closer to the Quarter-Finals of the U18 European
Championship Women after routing Russia, 92-66, on the first day of the Second
Round in Bucharest.
The Russian team may have had the advantage when it came to height but they
had absolutely no answer to the swarming defence and quick hands of the Spanish,
which led to the Russians spilling the ball an astonishing 28 times.
Russia really didn't show any kind of shooting touch after a tight first
quarter, which Spain just shaded 16-15 and indeed there was no real sign Russia
would subsequently implode and go into meltdown.
After the start of the second quarter, Spain began to raise the tempo and
after building up a nine-point half-time advantage they really went for the
jugular when they returned to the floor.
Showing no mercy, Spain rampaged their way through the third period pouring
in a superb 32 points to end any glimmer of hope Russia had of launching a fight
back.
Leticia Romero was terrific in the Spanish backcourt, finishing with 17
points and leading the way defensively with five steals.
