TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – The highest level of international basketball continues to be dotted with Florida State Women's Basketball connections. While Leticia Romero and Leonor Rodriguez have already gained experience on the Spanish National Team, it was announced on Friday thatMaria Conde has also been added to the FIBA EuroBasket Women 2017 roster.
The FIBA EuroBasket Women Tournament takes place from June 16-25 in the Czech Republic. The tournament is played every two years and includes the 16 best European countries, including Spain, Belarus, Italy, Belgium, Montenegro, Turkey, Slovak Republic, Latvia, Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Serbia, Greece, Hungary, Slovenia and France.
In the latest Nike FIBA World Rankings, European countries make up five of the Top 10 teams across the world. Spain enters the tournament ranked No. 2 worldwide following its silver-medal finish at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio.
Rodriguez and Romero both made the Spanish Women's National Team in the fall 2014, helping Spain to a runner-up spot at the FIBA World Cup in Turkey. Romero will enjoy her second stint at the EuroBasket, and both Romero and Rodriguez played large roles in last year's Summer Olympics.
Conde will make her debut with the team in Prague, hoping to be the latest Seminole who can earn a consistent spot on the Spanish National Team. She spent two seasons at Florida State and was an important part of FSU's NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight squads in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
In her two seasons with the Seminoles, Conde averaged 3.6 points in 16.6 minutes per game primarily off the bench. The Madrid native was one of the key contributors off the bench who made big strides in her defense in her time in Tallahassee. She greatly improved from the charity stripe from her first to second season, shooting 76.9 percent as a sophomore.
Spain won the 2013 EuroBasket Championship in what was a starting point of its ascension as a country in women's basketball. Prior to its 2016 silver medal in the Olympics, Spain had never medaled on the World's Biggest Stage.
Spain has three games in the group phase before they look to qualify for the quarterfinals on June 20. On East Coast time, all three games are in the morning, facing Hungary on Friday, July 16 (6:30 a.m. ET), Ukraine on Saturday (9 a.m. ET) and the Czech Republic on Monday, June 19 (Noon ET).
The quarterfinals take place on Thursday, June 22 and the semifinals and championship is on Sunday, June 25.
