TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – With the 2014-15 Florida
State Women’s Basketball season in the rearview mirror for nearly the last three
weeks, several fans, media, alumnae, boosters and families of the program
commemorated the historic season with a banquet celebration on Sunday night.
With former Seminole and current graduate assistant Morgan Toles providing
tons of laughter as host of “Seminole Night Live,” those in attendance were
treated to an event full of speeches, video highlights, game skits and awards at
the FSU Basketball Training Center. It was all a fitting tribute to FSU’s NCAA
Elite Eight season.
As far as individual awards, the team’s most valuable player was given to
junior center Adut Bulgak. The Edmonton, Canada, resident led FSU in points per
game (12.3), rebounds per game (9.5), offensive rebounds (113), defensive
rebounds (219), total rebounds (332), field goals made (162), blocked shots (54)
and double-doubles (12).
The Sue Galkantas Offensive Player of the Year was sophomore point guard
Leticia Romero. The Las Palmas, Spain, native was named an Associated Press
Honorable Mention All-American as her mid-season arrival onto the playing floor
added more firepower to the Seminole offense. Romero joined Notre Dame’s Lindsay
Allen as the two players who were in the Top 10 in field goal percentage (50.4)
and assists (5.4) in ACC play.
Sophomore forward Ivey Slaughter was awarded the Alicia Gladden Defensive
Player of the Year. The Macon, Ga., native led the team far and away in charges
while finishing second on the team with 219 total rebounds. Slaughter was often
assigned the task of guarding the opposing team’s best post player.
The Matthew Schmauch Leadership Award went to redshirt senior guard Maegan
Conwright. After spending just one playing season with the Seminoles, Conwright
became a strong guiding presence through her on-floor leadership and her
experience as a Division I athlete.
The Ronalda Pierce Heart Award was received by redshirt freshman forward
Gabby Bevillard and redshirt senior Lauren Coleman. Both players have been
saddled by serious injuries but each in their own ways has proven to overcome
them. Bevillard earns the honor for the second consecutive year. Coleman was
also given the newly created Seminole Captains Award.
