MANHATTAN, Kan. – A combined 50 points from freshman Leticia Romero and senior Katya Leick
paced Kansas State on Saturday night, as the Wildcats withstood a late
rally from No. 13/11 Iowa State to grab an 80-74 upset victory Saturday
night.
K-State (8-9, 2-4 Big 12) picked up its second straight Big 12 victory and have now defeated a ranked opponent in eight straight seasons. The win was also the 850th in program history, which came in front of a season-high crowd of 8,221.
Romero finished with a career-high 27 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, and 8-of-10 from the foul line. She is the first Wildcat to register consecutive 20-point games since Brittany Chambers set the school record last season with nine straight. Romero also tallied six rebounds and five assists.
Leick notched a career-high 23 points on 6-of-11 from the field and a career-best 4-of-8 from the 3-point line. She also hauled in five rebounds for the ninth time this season.
The Wildcats raced out to a quick 15-5 lead after three-pointers from Romero and Leick in the first six minutes of the game. K-State would hold a lead for most of the first half, and lead by as many as 13 points.
The Wildcats had a great shooting half, going 12-of-27 (44.4%) from the field, including 6-of-14 (42.9%) from three-point range. K-State’s defense smothered the Cyclones (14-3, 3-3 Big 12), holding the visitors to a paltry 6-of-31 (19.4%) shooting from the field in the opening stanza. The Wildcats went into the break with a 30-22 advantage.
Romero led K-State with 11 points and five rebounds at halftime.
The second half provided a more offensive game, with both teams pouring in at least 50 points. A free
throw from Leick gave the Wildcats their biggest lead of the game at 65-49 with 4:15 remaining in the game.
Both teams traded baskets until Iowa State mounted a late comeback, as the Cyclones made five three-pointers in the final three minutes of the game to cut the lead to 77-74 in favor
of the Wildcats. K-State however was able to make 16-of-22 from the
free-throw line in the last five minutes to keep the Cyclones at bay.
It was a back and forth half, with both teams shooting at least 50 percent from the field in the final period. K-State finished the night shooting 25-of-51 (49%) from the field, which included a 30-12 advantage in points in the paint. The Wildcats also went 21-of-30 from the free-throw line, all in the second-half.
ISU had four players finish in double figures, with Brynn Williams leading the way with 17 points.
The Wildcats travel to Waco, Texas on Wednesday for a matchup with No. 7/7 Baylor before returning for a two-game home stand starting with Kansas next Saturday.
