Wildcats Fall to No. 9/9 Baylor in Big 12 Opener

Woods and Romero combine for 47 points in defeat
 

Jan. 2, 2014 MANHATTAN, Kan. – The duo of Ashia Woods and Leticia Romero combined for 47 points, but it was not enough for Kansas State, as the Wildcats dropped their Big 12 opener to No. 9/9 Baylor, 92-63, Thursday night at Bramlage Coliseum. Woods finished with a career-high 27 points on a career-best 9-of-14 shooting from the field including a 3-of-6 effort from beyond the arc. This was her first career 20-point game. The product of Wichita, Kan., also pocketed a career-high six steals and hauled in five rebounds. Romero tallied her second career 20-point game with 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting and pulled in five rebounds. The native of Las Palmas, Spain has now scored in every game this season and has reached double figures in nine games this season. The opening seven minutes saw the Wildcats (6-6, 0-1) and Lady Bears (11-1, 1-0) trade baskets, with K-State hanging tight with Baylor. After Woods knocked down two free-throws to make the score 15-10 in favor of Baylor, the Lady Bears used a 15-5 run to take a commanding 32-15 lead with eight minutes remaining in the half. The Wildcats would cut the lead down to 43-31 after a Woods three-pointer with 3:11 remaining, but four straight points by the Lady Bears to end the half gave them a 47-31 lead going into the locker room. The second half saw Baylor take control of the tempo. The Wildcats would come as close as 13 points after a lay-up from Woods with 15:40 left in the game, but Baylor proved to be too much. The Bears would stretch their lead to as many as 30 points. Odyssey Sims finished the game with an impressive 40 points, to lead Baylor in scoring. Sune Agbuke registered 16 points and 14 rebounds. The Wildcats shot 21-of-58 (.362) from the field for the game, but were 5-of-26 (.192) from beyond the arc. The Lady Bears turned in a 30-of-58 (.517) effort. The Wildcats held the edge in second chance points, 16-12, and fast break points, 9-4, but Baylor controlled the points in the paint, 34-28, and bench scoring, 19-2. The Wildcats will regroup and return to action on Sunday in Austin, Texas, for a match up with the Texas Longhorns. The game is set for a 2 p.m., tipoff and will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network with audio available on the K-State Sports Network and for free at kstatesports.com/allaccess. K-State returns to home action on Wednesday, Jan. 8, in a clash with No. 11/13 Oklahoma State at 7 p.m.
