Romero Selected as First Team All-American
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Florida State Women’s Basketball senior guard Leticia Romero has been selected as a Senior CLASS Award First Team All-American, announced on Thursday afternoon by the Senior CLASS Award Committee.
The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I women’s basketball coaches, national basketball media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in Division I women’s basketball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable
achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Romero was an exemplary student-athlete in her three years at Florida State, demonstrating an enormous obligation to her playing career, academics and getting out in the community. The native of Las Palmas, Spain, is a two-time All-ACC Academic Team member who recently finished up a stellar senior season.
Romero helped guide the Seminoles to their second NCAA Elite Eight in three seasons, establishing career highs in points per game (12.5), and 3-point field goal percentage (50.9 percent) in her final year. Romero exits as the ACC’s all-time leader in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting a remarkable 47.7 percent (112-of-235) over her 2 ½ playing seasons.
FSU’s first-ever three-time All-American has been named to the Associated Press All-America squad so far in 2017. She is also an All-ACC First Team member, a WBCA All-Region honoree and part of numerous watch lists. Romero returned for her senior season as college’s basketball first returning Olympic medalist since 1988, helping Spain win the silver in the 2016 Summer Games in Rio.
In just 2 ½ seasons, Romero ranks in the Top 10 in school history in 3-point field goal percentage (1st - 47.7 percent), free throw percentage (1st - 83.7 percent), assists (tied for fourth – 388) and 3-point field goals made (10th – 112). She will go down as one of the most efficient shooters in women’s college basketball history, being the only player for a majority of this season to shoot 50/50/90 from the floor.
Oregon State’s Sydney Wiese was named the Senior CLASS Award winner, while Romero is joined on the first team alongside Kelsey Plum of Washington, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough of Maryland and Lizzy Wendell of Drake.
