TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Florida State Women’s Basketball senior point guard Leticia Romero has been selected to the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 list, announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
Romero is one of 25 front-running candidates for one of college basketball’s most iconic trophies, as chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts.
The ACC leads all conferences with six selections, followed by the Pac-12 with five, the Big Ten and SEC with four each, The American with three, the Big 12 with two and the Big East with one selection.
Romero’s offensive assertiveness has allowed her to become one of the nation’s most impressive players this season. The Las Palmas, Spain, native leads the seventh-ranked Seminoles in points per game (14.3), 3-point field goal percentage (55 percent) and free throw percentage (94.6 percent).
Romero’s marksmanship from beyond the arc at 55 percent is also the nation’s highest 3-point field goal percentage.
As the first Summer Games Olympian to return to college basketball since 1988, Romero is putting her once-in-a-lifetime experience to good use. She already has 12 double-figure scoring games this season, including four 20-point games. She notched a career-high 25 points vs. No. 25 Gonzaga on Nov. 25 at the Paradise Jam.
Romero has been at her best against AP Top 25 opponents this season, averaging 16.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, shooting 54.7 percent overall (29-of-53) and 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from 3-point range. She delivered 21 points and six rebounds in a nationally-ranked win over Florida 83-58.
The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2017 John R. Wooden Award. The leading candidates will be further pared to 20 top players in early February. Fifteen top players who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA will be submitted to voters on the Final Ballot prior to the NCAA Tournament. Every year, players have made the Final Ballot that were not on the preseason or midseason lists. Voters are permitted to take into consideration the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament when casting the ballot. The ten-person Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament.
