ST. THOMAS, V.I. (AP) – Shakayla Thomas picked the right time to come up with her first double-double of the season.
Thomas had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 10 Florida State pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Michigan 76-62 on Saturday in the final day of the Paradise Jam tournament.
Imani Wright added 19 points, Ivey Slaughter had 15 and Leticia Romero 10 for the Seminoles (6-1), who won their third straight game.
"We just had to come together as a team, and keep the momentum," Thomas said after her sixth career double-double. "It was all about our momentum. We had it on the court, and all about staying positive. Even when we got down, we just got back on defense and started working."
Katelynn Flaherty scored 18 points, Kysre Gondrezick added 17 and Hallie Thome 13 for the Wolverines (6-1), who fell behind in the second quarter but stayed close until the Seminoles opened the fourth quarter with a 16-8 run.
"They're a really tough team to guard," Florida State coach Sue Semrau said. "But we did a great job of fighting through the fatigue. We did a much better job of rebounding the ball. Shakayla rebounded the heck out of the ball."
Thomas' layup with 2:54 left capped the run, putting Florida State up 69-56.
"We just went on a scoring drought," Michigan coach Kim Barnes Arico said. "I don't know if we got worn down a little bit or what. We started to press a little bit and started to force things instead of sharing the ball. We were in a great spot, we just didn't come out the way we needed to."
POST-GAME NOTES BY FSU SPORTS INFORMATION:
• Senior forward Ivey Slaughter and junior forward Shakayla Thomas became the 32nd and 33rd Seminoles to surpass 1,000 points. Slaughter now has 1,009 career points while Thomas has 1,002.
• Florida State won its second Paradise Jam title and its fifth championship at a tournament located in the Caribbean.
• Michigan entered Saturday’s contest averaging 89.5 points while shooting 52.8 percent overall and 44.9 percent from long range. The Wolverines scored a season-low 62 points, shot 44.4 percent from the floor but did go 8-of-16 from long range.
• Senior point guard Leticia Romero was named tournament MVP, finishing with 17.3 points while shooting a tournament-record 70.4 percent (19-of-27) from the floor. Thomas was added to the Paradise Jam All-Tournament Team as well.
• Thomas’ 19 points and 11 rebounds marked the sixth double-double of her career.
• Redshirt junior guard Imani Wright was enormous with 19 points, including four 3-point field goals. She shot 7-of-11 from beyond the arc in her three games at the Paradise Jam.
• Senior guard Brittany Brown had three steals to boost her career total to 251. She is third all-time at FSU, trailing second-place Tia Paschal by 18 (269) and all-time leader Alicia “Ice” Gladden by 24 (275).
• FSU’s offense executed well once again down the stretch, shooting 60 percent (6-of-10) in the fourth period. Michigan shot 5-of-14 (35.7 percent) in the final 10 minutes.
• FSU has won four consecutive games against Big Ten opponents, and faces another team from the conference in Minnesota in next week’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge. FSU and the Golden Gophers play in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
