Wings Add Depth with Romero and George

The Wings have signed two players to their roster in the last week. Leticia Romero, a 5-8 guard from Spain, and Cayla George, a 6-4 center from Australia both join the roster with hopes of adding depth at the guard and center positions.

Romero was originally drafted by the Connecticut Sun with the 16th pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft. The native of Las Palmas, Spain, who competed collegiately at Florida State, brings international experience to the roster after playing with the Spanish National Team and helping the side win the 2017 European Women’s Basketball Championship. She also played a big role in helping her country qualify for the Olympic Games in 2016, where the team won a silver medal. Romero was the second youngest player on that roster, which included current and former WNBA players Astou Ndour, Anna Cruz, and Marta Xargay.

During her senior season at Florida State (2016-17), Romero was named All-America Honorable Mention (AP), All-ACC Second Team and led the ACC in three-point field goal percentage (50.9 %). During the 2015-16 season, she was named Honorable Mention All-America (WBCA), and averaged 16.3 points per game, 3.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists. In that campaign, she was also named to the NCAA Greensboro All-Regional Team and while helping lead the Seminoles to the Elite Eight.

George is reunited with Australian teammate Liz Cambage. She most recently competed in the Connecticut Sun’s training camp after playing for the Mercury in 2015 and 2017. Overall, she has played in 66 WNBA games, averaging 4.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest. On July 28, 2017 George set a WNBA record for most defensive rebounds by a bench player with 14 against the Chicago Sky. The Australian native also owns two career double-doubles, seven 10+ scoring games and three 10+ rebounding outings in her career.

George started her professional basketball career in 2005 when she debuted in Australia’s Women’s National Basketball League and played for the Australian Institute for Sport for three years. In 2007 she was named WNBL Bettie Watson Rookie of the Year when she averaged 13.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Throughout her international play, George has participated in numerous championship rounds. In 2011 and 2013 she won gold in the FIBA Oceania Championship for Women. She also collected a silver medal in the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women and FIBA U21 World Championship for Women as a member of Team Australia.

The two new additions bring international experience to a Wings roster loaded with talent. They give the Wings increased depth at each position as the team moves to a tough stretch in the season.

The Wings are home for two games, as they have a rematch against the Phoenix Mercury on June 12 before taking on the Las Vegas Aces at College Park Center on June 15.
