Leticia Romero, who had a protracted dispute with Kansas State before getting her release to transfer last month, has signed to play for Florida State's women's basketball program.
The 5-foot-8 guard, who is from Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, will sit out the upcoming season as per NCAA transfer rules. Then she will have three seasons of eligibility remaining, starting with the 2015-16 school year.
Romero led Kansas State in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals this past season as a freshman. Kansas State coach Deb Patterson was fired at the conclusion of the Wildcats' season in March. In April, Romero requested a transfer that was initially denied by the school's athletic director and then an appeals committee.
Romero hired an attorney to help her continue the process. In late May, Kansas State said it made a policy change in how it processes transfer requests, and then implemented that retroactively to give Romero her scholarship release.
Florida State was the runner-up to K-State when Romero initially went through the recruiting process, so she was already familiar with Seminoles coach Sue Semrau and her staff. The Seminoles were 21-12 this past season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, where they lost to Stanford.
"Leticia is a significant addition to Florida State women's basketball," Semrau said in a statement. "She has already proven that she is a tremendous player at this level".
